Breakage and fixage

Funny day today. Here’s what broke and was fixed:

  • My Blackburn Mammoth Mountain bike pump broke over the weekend, or so I thought. Today I decided that I should recycle it, since it’s solid aluminum. As I was taking it apart, I decided to clean and lube it and, behold, it was fixed, good as new. Yay.
  • The internet was flaky so I tried to find out what the problem was. What was NOT the problem was the Actiontec 701 DSL modem, of course, because I have a spare one of them preconfigured. Or so I thought, because when I tried swapping it with its twin, the twin wouldn’t power on. Funny because hardware usually doesn’t fail while sitting on the shelf unplugged. But it’s no surprise that the failure was the flaky Linksys WRT54GL wireless router/firewall. I ordered a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 to replace it — let’s hope the reviews are right and it’s more reliable.
  • I spilled a coke on my keyboard, so I ordered a new one. I cleaned it out but the uuuuuuuuuu and iiiiiiii keys are a bit stiff and sometimes stick. I am a huge fan of the Keytronic keyboards since way back. Make sure you get the one with the standard IBM layout, not the big L-shaped enter key.

Of course as I’m typing this blog posting the router fails… so maybe it was the DSL router after all not the Linksys. Grr.

spilling drinks

George, when you were living in the 9th St. place didn’t you spill a beer on your keyboard? Twice? Within the span of a month? I’m starting to see a trend.

No memory

I have no memory of spilling two beers in my keyboard, but if they were the 9th and 10th beers then I can suggest a reasonable explanation for not remembering…

Instead I’m going to blame it on the coincident economic malaise in 2001 and 2009. I tell ya, this coke spillage was extraordinary. I seriously whacked that can and it went everywhere. And to think that I was trying to cut down on my caffeine intake. The coke uprising!
